Medical Services

Here at Derma, we provide dermatologic care for infants, children, adults, and the elderly.  Below is a list of skin disorders and conditions that we commonly manage and treat:

Moles and Freckles

Moles and freckles are collections of melanocytes or pigment cells in the skin, which traditionally form brown marks.  A freckle consists of a thin layer of melanocytes whereas a mole consists of a significantly greater number of melanocytes.  Moles and freckles can be present at birth (birthmarks) but usually form with time and age and increase in number with sun or ultraviolet exposure.  Under the wrong circumstances any single mole or freckle has the potential to transform into a melanoma, a life threatening skin cancer.  Patients need to be aware of this risk and begin monitoring their moles and freckles for any changes and the suspicious signs of asymmetry, irregular borders, uneven color, and large size (greater than an eraser head).  Dr. Kwon and the Derma staff can provide a full examination of your moles and freckles to insure their stability and your safety.  We will perform a minimally invasive skin biopsy on an atypical appearing mole or freckle.  Schedule your mole exam today.

Precancers, or actinic keratoses, are dry or crusty skin lesions that appear commonly on the face, scalp, neck, arms, and chest.  Skin can be damaged by previous years of sun exposure, producing these precancers many years later.  Current or ongoing exposure to ultraviolet radiation accelerates this process.  At Derma, we perform skin examinations to evaluate the extent of precancerous presence and then formulate appropriate treatment.  Strategies may include cryotherapy, chemical peel medical therapy, and at home topicals.   Schedule your skin evaluation for precancers today.

Cysts, Warts, and Benign Growths

Human beings develop many different types of growths on their bodies, especially with time and maturity.  A common growth is the seborrheic keratosis, which is a bumpy brown or gray lesion that can occur anywhere.  Skin tags are soft pieces of skin that often occur on the neck, upper thighs, and in the armpits.  Seborrheic keratoses and skin tags can be electively removed or destroyed cosmetically.  Warts are virally induced growths that present as hardened skin spots or bumps on the hands, feet, arms, legs, and face.  At Derma, we treat warts with cryotherapy, strong acid treatments, medicated injections, surgical removal, and home acid therapy.  Cysts and lipomas are masses that appear deep in the skin at any location.  A cyst is a ball of dead skin trapped underneath the skin’s surface.  A lipoma is a benign fatty growth.  Both cysts and lipomas can be surgically removed with relatively small surgical scars under medical insurance.  Schedule an evaluation of any growths you may have today.

Acne is caused by genetics, hormones, oil secretion, plugged pores, and bacteria.  It often affects the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back with unsightly breakouts.  Many times, over the counter products can improve only mild cases of acne, and stronger therapy is often needed.  At Derma, we use prescription strength topicals, specialized cleansers, oral antibiotics, hormone modulation for women, Photodynamic Therapy, and generic Accutane.  Schedule an acne evaluation today.

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition of the skin that presents with redness, enlarged blood vessels, acne lesions, and skin thickening.  It can occur in all skin types but is very common in fair skin complexions.  Rosacea is often misdiagnosed as acne but does not truly respond well to traditional acne treatments.  Here at Derma, we use a combination of prescription topicals, oral medications, and carefully selected cosmeceutical products to achieve the best results.  We may refer some patients to Aura Skin and Laser for Intense Pulsed Light treatments or Photodynamic Therapy.  Schedule a facial skin exam today.

Rashes of the Face and Body

Rashes can occur on the face because of rosacea, perioral dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, lupus, precancerous sun damage, and allergic reactions.  They can occur on the body as a result of allergic reactions, hives, keratosis pilaris, eczema, psoriasis, drug reactions, and various obscure skin disorders.  At Derma, we can diagnose the cause of a rash and prescribe an effective treatment modality.  Call and make an appointment for a rash evaluation today.

Bromohidrosis and Body Odor

Did you know that unusually strong body odor is a medical condition that can be treated?   It is called bromohidrosis.  At Derma we have multiple interventions to control offensive body odor.  This condition has nothing to do with cleanliness or how many times a day one bathes.  Schedule an appointment at Derma.

Leg Ulcer Therapy

Here at Derma we are experts in the care of chronic leg ulcers.  Leg ulcers can be caused by vascular disease, diabetes, and other disorders of the skin.  Dr. Kwon and his staff have extensive wound care training to offer a specialized and unique approach to the healing of ulcers.  Have a specialist of the skin and an expert in wound healing dynamics better care for the treatment of your leg ulcer.  Schedule an appointment at Derma.

Ezcema is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by irritated, itchy patches.  It is exacerbated by dry weather, hot water, and a lack of moisturization.  At Derma, we treat eczema patients with good homecare products, prescription creams, ultraviolet light therapy, and oral medications.  Schedule an appointment to treat your eczema today.

Psoriasis is a tougher form of eczema which is usually genetically determined.  It is caused by abnormal overgrowth of skin cells that create thick plaques.  Psoriasis traditionally involves the scalp, elbows, knees, and trunk.  At Derma, we treat psoriasis with topical creams, ultraviolet light therapy, oral medications, and injectables.  For patients with psoriasis who seek an alternative to traditional prescription therapy or want supplementary therapy, UVB laser phototherapy is another excellent option.  At Derma, we utilize the Xtrac Excimer Laser to treat all cases of psoriasis regardless of the site or severity. The Xtrac works by delivering high intensity UVB directly to the psoratic lesions, slowing abnormal growth and allowing the healing process to begin. Typical improvement is seen within 6-10 sessions and clearance can occur within 10-20 sessions with a twice weekly routine.  Remission can last anywhere from 3-6 months.  This therapy is safe and is generally covered by most health insurance plans.  Please schedule an appointment to treat your psoriasis today.

Nail Changes

Fingernails and toenails actually change with time, especially after the age of thirty.  Nails can begin to exhibit alterations in thickness, color, and fragility.  Many physicians mistake these changes to be caused by fungus and prescribe oral anti-fungal medications that risk damaging the liver.  For fungal nails, we offer laser therapy that can eradicate fungus safely without the need for oral antifungals.  At Derma, we can evaluate and diagnose your nails and prescribe therapies to improve their texture and color.   Make an appointment today.

Hair Loss

Hair loss affects many people and can be caused by genetics, vitamin deficiencies, dietary deficiencies, dandruff, and inflammatory scalp diseases.  Popular touted products sold in stores and on the internet rarely provide successful results and are mainly sold via marketing hype.  Prior to purchasing products that are unproven and untested, consider having your hairloss evaluated properly by a Board Certified Dermatologist at Derma.  Dr. Kwon has had extensive training with a hair loss expert in Chicago, Illinois, during his residency.  Schedule a hair loss appointment today.

Individuals with vitiligo understand the frustration and embarrassment that discoloration of the skin can cause.  Vitiligo can be characterized as spontaneous color loss of the skin and hair caused by the immune system.  Topical prescription therapies, laboratory screening, UVB phototherapy, and Xtrac Excimer Laser therapy are options we utilize at Derma to treat vitiligo. The Xtrac Excimer Laser is an advanced technology that helps repigment the skin in vitiligo sufferers.  Working to stimulate melanocytes with a concentrated beam of light, the Xtrac laser focuses only on the areas that need to be treated. Repigmentation of the skin can be seen within 6-12 sessions and can be complete in fewer than 30 treatments.  Health insurance companies usually cover UVB laser phototherapy for vitiligo.  Please schedule an appointment.

Hyperhidrosis and Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis can be characterized as an abnormal increase in sweating.  Patients who suffer from this medical condition may experience unpredictable excessive perspiration even in cooler temperatures.  Though hyperhidrosis may occur anywhere on the body, commonly affected areas include the hands, feet, and underarms.  At Derma, therapies for treating excessive sweating include topicals, oral medications, iontophoresis, and Botox® injections.  Call today to schedule an evaluation of excessive sweating.

Cuts, Lacerations, and Stitches

Instead of going to the emergency room and waiting hours to be seen, come to Derma to have stitches placed expertly by our dermatologic healthcare providers.  This is a service that is covered by insurance and most medical plans.  Scar minimization techniques will be utilized during the procedure and afterwards.  Topical anesthesia is also available.  Call Derma to schedule a same day appointment.

Numbness and Tingling

Numbness and tingling of the skin can sometimes be perceived as itching.  It is a disorder of the microscopic nerves in the skin and is commonly referred to as paresthesia.  This is a condition that can occur as a result of injury, chronic disease, herpes zoster or shingles, and vitamin deficiencies.  Many patients suffer without much help from their physicians and specialists in other fields of medicine.  Here at Derma we are experts at treating this condition and have a high success rate with improving it.  Schedule an assessment with one of the providers at Derma today.
